If you haven’t read then, I encourage you to. In the meantime, I’m going to move on to this week’s topic – reframing perfection.

What is perfection? A crock of shit.

At least, when it comes to our perceptions of people. Oxford Dictionary defines Perfection as the condition, state, or quality of being free or as free as possible from all flaws or defects.

I’m sorry, but I don’t know a single human being who meets this definition. NOT ONE.

How is this relevant? Well, tell me, how much time have you spent thinking about, longing for, or chasing after perfection? The perfect ass or perhaps the perfect smile? Maybe it’s the perfect sale or the perfect speech.

We’ve all done it. It’s time to stop because it’s bullshit. 

How to Reframe Perfection.

What, my telling you perfection is shit, that’s not enough? Fine, I get it. Let me break it into a few steps for you.

Step 1: NOTICE that you felt compelled to achieve perfection in some way.

Step 2: Say to yourself “I am aware that I’m chasing perfection and that perfection is a crock of shit..” (Acknowledging)

Step 3: Assess your actions – have you done your best?

Step 4: Did you say yes?

  • Yes: Give yourself a pat on the back, and mentally flip-off perfection. You’re already rocking it.
  • No: How about this, try doing the very best you can. Go on, I have faith in you. Repeat steps 1 – 4 as needed.

Step 5: Rinse repeat anytime you feel the longing for fictional perfection.

See, easy as pie. Alright, I lied. It’s easy if you use it again and again. Do your best to repeat this process at all opportunities until it becomes second nature.

As the saying goes, “DONE is better than PERFECT”.

The Post-Perfection Pep Talk

Let’s acknowledge the impact Social Media has had on our perceptions around perfection. I know how easy it is to get sucked up into everyone else’s perfection BS. We all see it all the time. People habitually post the best moments and avoid sharing details on the worst.

Social media platforms driven by likes compels us to strive for perfection in our lives. Gotta get them likes, ya?

That’s why going through this process and letting go of perfection is so important. If you don’t, you’re likely to end up like so many others who feel more disconnected and isolated since the invention of social media.

Go Reframe Perfection!

Or, you know, eliminate it altogether.

If nothing else, I hope this post has made you more aware of the dangers of striving for perfection. Strive to do your best, to never give up in the face of adversity, and to always get back up when you’ve been knocked down.

As long as you do that, you’re a winner, a champion, a hero – even if you’re not perfect.
